Name: Colleen Subject: the teacher Comment: I have been knitting for 42yrs off and on, I first learned to knit at the age of 12 in 4H from a wonderful Polish woman I called Momma Graham. One of my projects were socks with dp needles and I thought I would never finish, last fall Momma Graham pasted away at the age of 87 and I figured it was time to takle dp and socks again. I've found a new love, in the past year I've made myself seven new pairs of socks. She has been crocheting for years now. She is almost totally blind, but she knows the stitches by heart. She says that the crocheting has helped her brain stay active and alert. If I live to be as old as my great-grandmother, I'm going to keep up my knitting! Name: Mandi Subject: The Left Handed Knitter Comment: I never picked up knitting because I was told only a leftie could teach a leftie. Actually, anyone can teach a leftie - with a little patience. People learn things in different ways. I find the books a little confusing, but sitting side by side with a knitter prepared to teach is easiest. It took me about half an hour to learn knit stitches. You can also learn a thing or two just puttering around. You can even create stitches! I take my knitting everywhere, to the movies, on long drives, waiting for appointments, etc. There were two big sections dedicated to knitters at the Toronto Blue Jays last year~! I am proud to have learned cable and am always playing with more complicated stitches. I mostly knit blankets for home and charities. Name: zbird123 Subject: paitence Comment: Hi! If you want to learn how to knit, you should have paitence. Especially if you are a new knitter. I am 11 and have been knitting for about 6 months. I first learned from a project in Girl Scouts. It really helps if you have a mentor, but videos work too. Anyway, my first couple stitches didn't look that awesome. But I kept practicing and now I've knitted a scarf,a headband, a braclet, and I am almost done with a big purse. See a little paitence goes a long way. I am now 69 and in this time I have knit countless, sweater--adults and children,hats, scarfs, socks. You name it and I have probably made l of the item. I would like to recommend to all knitters the two books by Mary Thomas. Dover Publishing, on the net, has them in reprint. They are old but good. Maybe your library has a copy or here in US we can use inter-library loan. Her work is the basics for most of the modern knitting books. Keep on knitting! Name: JayJay Subject: Never give up... I'm JayJay (also known as PrincessG from when i was younger on here ;D) I have to admit, i gave up knitting for a year or two.. and im sad that i did.. but now im comming back stronger than ever! I have found the joy knitting brings to my life, especially helping to deal with a lot of stress from school. I'm turning 16 soon, and i hope to knit some pretty awesome stuff for myself before then. Im *hoping* to complete these thigh high socks im starting ;D They look pretty good so far. I love this site, and i always will.. I can also whip something up to decorate a present, or a bookmark, or whatever they become obsessed with. Its so much fun to find and design patterns, and i look forward to teaching my soon-to-come baby sister to knit. P.s ive been knitting for less than a year, but I've conquered quite a few difficult patterns:) Name: Mabelline Subject: oh my Comment: Thank you so much for posting the things from cancer survivors, surgery undertakers, etc. they are so inspiring because the mother of one of my best friends was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, and i wish i knew to knit then. Thank you. Name: Roxanne Subject: Teaching Kids to knit Comment: This place has become busy since the last time I checked in. I have a learn to knit group at the school where I teach. I invite any 3-5th grade student who wishes to learn to join me at recess time twice a week when I don't have a duty. They come when they choose and not if they wish to go out. (Knitting should be relaxing not a chore.) We have great fun. The best part is watching those who might not normally socialize, talking and comparing projects. I know that someone has really caught the bug when they start helping and fixing each others problems!!! I love this craft!!!! Name: Cathy Subject: Just starting!! Comment: Just before Christmas I learned I had a tumor in my neck/jaw and was told the surgery would be in Feb....then tests..surgery date was moved up. Since I knew I was going to have some "down time" coming I bought a bunch of books, some yarn and needles..Now I'm knitting! My kitten & puppy have turned 2 sweater attempts into cat scarves and my test patches make my husband tease that "those sweaters are too small". But now I have a hoody pattern & new bag to hide my "stuff" from the terrors in and I am starting in earnest. I'm surprised at how many people started with scarves & I seem to be jumping in in the middle! LOL But I love it! I've also quit smoking during this & the needles have really helped me threw it all!! I tried knitting about 30 years ago, but had babies and felt I had no time for it. Three years ago, a friend at work was making a baby blankie, and I got curious. I looked up knitting and haven't stopped knitting since. I am constantly knitting, socks, sweaters, scarves, all of it self-taught on the internet. Anyone who wants to can learn to knit and be good at it. "Trust the Pattern", and you will succeed. Now at 62 I am still a novice, but loving every stitch.
